How the result moveskg → kg/m²

BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. Between 18.5 and 25 counts as normal weight under the WHO scale. It does not distinguish muscle from fat.

Worked examples

How it's calculated

BMI = kg / m²

  1. StepConvert your height from centimetres to metres.
  2. StepSquare your height in metres.
  3. StepDivide your weight in kilograms by that squared height.
  4. ResultCompare the result to the WHO categories below.

What this number means

Body mass index is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. It divides your weight by the square of your height, which is why the unit is kg/m², and places the result on the scale the WHO and CDC share: below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 healthy weight, 25.0 to 29.9 overweight, and 30.0 and above obesity, which the same table splits further at 35.0 and 40.0. The imperial version — pounds divided by inches squared, times 703 — lands on the same number. Read the result as a flag rather than a verdict. A value outside the healthy band is a reason to look further, at blood pressure, waist circumference, family history and activity, not a conclusion on its own. The caveat that matters most is that BMI measures excess weight, not excess fat. It cannot tell muscle from bone from fat, so a trained athlete can land in the overweight band with very little body fat: in one study, men who all shared a BMI of 27 kg/m² had body fat percentages ranging from 10 to 32 percent. It also ignores where fat sits — visceral fat around the abdominal organs carries far more metabolic risk than fat on hips and thighs — so someone with a healthy BMI can still be carrying exactly the risk the number was meant to catch.

For people of Asian descent, the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease rises from a lower BMI than the standard cut-offs suggest. The WHO lists 23 and 27.5 as additional public-health action points alongside 18.5 and 25.

A second number worth having

A common companion measure is waist divided by height, with 0.5 as the usual cut-off. It reflects abdominal fat, which BMI cannot see, and needs nothing but a tape measure.

Where BMI does not apply

Children and teenagers need percentiles for their age and sex, not the adult bands. Pregnancy, very high muscle mass and limb loss all break the assumption the formula makes.

It was built to describe populations

The index was devised in the 1830s to characterise groups, not individuals. That is why the same value can describe a lean runner and a sedentary office worker.

Commonly misread

My BMI is 27, so I am carrying too much fat.

BMI cannot tell muscle from fat. A trained athlete can sit in the overweight band with a low body-fat percentage.

A BMI inside the healthy band means my weight carries no risk.

Where fat sits matters as much as how much there is. Visceral fat around the organs carries more metabolic risk than fat on hips and thighs.

The imperial formula gives a different number.

Pounds divided by inches squared, times 703, lands on the same value. Both forms are exact.

Questions

How is BMI calculated?

BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. The imperial form multiplies pounds divided by inches squared by 703 and gives the same number. Both are exact — nothing in the calculation is estimated.

What BMI counts as healthy?

The classification this calculator uses puts the healthy range at 18.5 to 24.9. Below that is underweight, from 25.0 overweight, from 30.0 obesity. These are population thresholds, not a diagnosis for any one person.

What BMI counts as overweight?

Overweight runs from 25.0 to 29.9 in the classification this calculator uses. From 30.0 the same table calls it obesity.

What BMI counts as obese?

Obesity starts at 30.0. The calculator shows the band, not the class — the classification splits obesity further at 35.0 and 40.0.

What BMI counts as underweight?

Underweight is any BMI below 18.5. The calculator will show it, but a low BMI has many possible causes and the number alone says nothing about which one.

Is BMI the same as body fat percentage?

No. BMI divides total mass by height squared and cannot tell muscle from fat, so a muscular person and a sedentary person can share a BMI and differ widely in body fat. Measuring body fat takes a different method.
