Of everything an officially ordered relocation costs, exactly one item is a lump sum: the flat-rate allowance for miscellaneous relocation expenses. It covers what cannot be itemised — reassembly work, connections, tips, small change. Since 2019 the statute names no fixed euro amounts, only shares of the top salary step of pay grade A 13: 15 percent for the entitled person and 10 percent for every further person sharing the household before and after the move. Your own pay grade makes no difference, and a spouse counts exactly as much as a child. Anyone who had no dwelling the day before loading, or sets none up afterwards, receives a flat 3 percent instead. If a relocation with a granted commitment already took place within the last five years, a repeat-move supplement of 50 percent is added — though not where the earlier move followed recruitment, the vacating of a federal flat, health grounds or the arrival of a further child. Everything else is itemised: transport costs against the cheapest quote, travel costs, compensation for double rent, agency fees, catch-up tuition for children. None of that is calculated here. And the precondition for any of it is the written or electronic commitment to reimburse relocation costs. Without it there is no claim at all, and the settlement office decides the amount.
This page reproduces § 10 BUKG and replaces neither an official statement nor legal advice. The claim goes to your employing authority; for federal staff the Federal Office of Administration settles it.
The statute names percentages of the A 13 top step, not euro amounts. The figures used here follow the pay level of May 2026; before that they were €993.11 and €662.07.
Removal firm, travel, double rent and agency fees are itemised separately and are not included here. Without a written commitment there is no claim at all.
Federal Relocation Expenses Act of 1990, last amended by Article 7 of the Act of December 2019. The euro amounts come from the Federal Office of Administration relocation guide, status May 2026, checked on 2026-08-29.
The lump sum depends on your own pay grade.
The basis is always the top salary step of grade A 13, whatever your own grade happens to be.
A spouse is worth more than a child.
The statute counts people sharing the household and draws no distinction. Both bring the same 10 percent.
The move must cut your commute by an hour.
That rule comes from tax law and appears nowhere in the BUKG. The statute works with a 30-kilometre catchment-area limit instead.
The removal firm's invoice is inside the lump sum.
Transport costs are reimbursed separately under § 6 BUKG against the cheapest quote. The lump sum only covers what cannot be itemised.

15 percent of the A 13 top salary step for the entitled person and 10 percent for every further member of the household. At the May 2026 pay level that is €1,074.62 and €716.41.
A flat 3 percent of the A 13 top step, currently €214.92. There are no additions for further people in that case, because those are tied to the dwelling condition.
When a committed move took place within the previous five years and a dwelling existed on both occasions. It amounts to 50 percent of the lump sum.
