Tenured teachers in Germany are civil servants, and civil-service pay is set by each state in its own salary act. The figures here are Anlage 3 to the Bavarian salary act, the basic salary scale of Besoldungsordnung A, in the version that has applied since February 2025. Two coordinates decide the amount. The Besoldungsgruppe follows the office you hold: A 12 and A 13 are the usual entry grades for teachers depending on the Lehramt, and A 14 is the next promotion office. The Stufe rises with time served, first in two-year steps, then three, then four, so the same office pays roughly a fifth more at the top than at entry. Grades do not start at the same step: A 12 begins at Stufe 4, and A 13 and A 14 begin at Stufe 5. Part-time work cuts the whole amount in the same proportion as the reduced teaching load. What the calculator reports is basic pay only. A family allowance for a spouse or children, the Bavarian structural allowance, office and post allowances and any overtime payment all come on top, and income tax, church tax and a private health insurance premium all come off. Another state has the same structure and different numbers.
The table is Anlage 3 to the Bayerisches Besoldungsgesetz, published by the state chancellery. Every other German state has its own salary act with different amounts.
These basic salary rates have applied since February 2025. Pay is adjusted every year or two, so compare the table date with the current one at your state finance office before using the figure.
Family and structural allowances, post allowances and overtime come on top; tax and a private health premium come off. This is the line the rest is built on, not the amount that reaches your account.
This page is an estimate and not legal, tax or pay advice. Your step assignment on appointment and any recognised prior service are decided by the employer.
A 13 pays the same wherever I teach in Germany.
Each state sets its own amounts, and the gap between the highest and lowest state runs to several hundred euros a month.
Every pay grade starts at Stufe 1.
The table starts each grade at its own entry step: A 12 at Stufe 4, A 13 and A 14 at Stufe 5. There is no lower amount in those grades.
This is what I take home.
It is the gross basic salary. Allowances are added, income tax and a private health premium are subtracted, and the order matters.

Basic pay runs from 5,247.58 € a month at Stufe 5 to 6,168.25 € at Stufe 11. Allowances such as the family and structural allowance come on top.
At the same step the gap runs from 527 euros of basic pay a month at Stufe 5 to 597 euros at Stufe 11. Which grade applies depends on the Lehramt you qualified for and the office you hold.
With time served in the office, in two-year steps at first, then three-year and finally four-year intervals. Recognised prior service can place a new appointee above the entry step.
Art. 6 of the Bavarian salary act cuts the pay in the same proportion as the working time. A half teaching load is half the basic salary.
Net pay depends on your tax class, church tax, the number of children and your private health premium, and none of that is a published table. Take the gross to an official Brutto-Netto-Rechner.
