Project Zomboid XP Rate Calculator

Result

1.00×

Result: 1.00 ×

The three XP bonuses multiply, they do not add. A character who starts a skill at level 1, takes Fast Learner and reads Volume 2 gains 4 times 1.3 times 5, which is 26 times the base rate. The ceiling is a level-3 start with Fast Learner and Volume 5: 138 times.

How it's calculated

Rate = starting-level factor × trait factor × book factor

  1. StepPick the level your occupation or traits gave you in this skill at the start.
  2. StepSay whether you took Fast Learner or Slow Learner.
  3. StepPick the highest skill-book volume you have finished for this skill.
  4. ResultMultiply the three factors — the result is your XP per action against base.

What this number means

What the source covers — and what it does not

Fast Learner at 130 %, Slow Learner at 70 % and the book table of 3, 5, 8, 12 and 16 stand in the linked guide, checked on 25 August 2026. The four starting-level factors do not: they come from an old configuration that justified them with Build 42 XP rates, and no reachable page states them.

The three bonuses multiply, they never add

A level-1 start, Fast Learner and a Volume 2 book give 4 × 1.3 × 5 = 26 times the base rate, not 10.3. The ceiling works the same way: 6.64 × 1.3 × 16 is 138.11.

A book only works inside its own band

Each volume covers a two-level band, so a Volume 5 book does nothing at skill level 3. Read the volume that matches the level you are standing on.

Server settings sit on top of all this

Sandbox and server options carry their own global XP multiplier that this calculator knows nothing about. If your in-game gain does not match, check that setting first.

Commonly misread

Fast Learner adds 30 % on top of my book bonus.

It multiplies: with a Volume 1 book the rate is 3 × 1.3 = 3.9, not 3.3.

The starting-level factors are as solid as the trait numbers.

They are not: 4, 5.32 and 6.64 come from an old configuration and are unverified. Only the trait and book factors stand in the source.

This rate applies to Strength and Fitness too.

Those two follow their own progression and sit outside this calculator.

Questions

How does the Project Zomboid XP system work?

Every bonus is a multiplier on the experience an action grants, and the multipliers stack by multiplication rather than addition. A level-1 start, Fast Learner and a Volume 1 book give 4 times 1.3 times 3, or 15.6 times the base rate. That is why reading the right book before grinding matters more than grinding longer.

How much XP does one skill level need?

The steps are 75, 150, 300, 750, 1500, 3000, 4500, 6000, 7500 and 9000 experience for levels 1 through 10. Levels 4 and 5 are where the curve turns steep, and that is exactly where Volume 2 becomes worth the detour.

Is the Fast Learner trait worth taking?

It costs six trait points and multiplies all skill experience by 1.3 for the whole run. Because it multiplies rather than adds, it is worth most when it sits on top of a book bonus. Note that Strength and Fitness follow their own progression and are outside this calculator.

How much XP do skill books add?

Volume 1 triples experience, then the volumes go 5, 8, 12 and 16 times. Each volume only works inside its own two-level band, so a Volume 5 book does nothing at level 3.

What is the highest multiplier possible?

A level-3 starting bonus at 6.64, Fast Learner at 1.3 and a Volume 5 book at 16 multiply out to 138.11 times the base rate. At that point a single action is worth more than an entire early-game session.

Do server settings change these numbers?

Yes. Sandbox and server options carry their own global XP multiplier that sits on top of everything here. If your in-game gain does not match, check that setting first.
