Multiply your weight in kilograms by a coefficient for your ability — roughly 1.0 for beginners, 0.42 for intermediates, 0.32 for experts — then adjust for fitness. A 75 kg intermediate of average fitness lands around 31.5 litres.
Volume captures float across every outline, while length alone does not. A short wide board and a longer narrow one can hold identical litres and paddle almost the same, which is why shapers print litres on the board.
About one litre per kilogram of body weight, sometimes more on a soft-top. For an 80 kg learner that is roughly 80 litres — the territory of foamies and big longboards, where paddling is easy and the board stays stable.
Divide pounds by 2.205 to get kilograms. 165 lb is about 75 kg and 200 lb about 91 kg. The coefficients are defined per kilogram, which is how volume charts are written.
As paddle fitness and wave reading improve and the waves get more powerful. Less volume sits deeper, holds a steep face and turns harder, but it punishes a slow pop-up.
It is a guideline, not a specification. Coefficients differ between shapers and fitting tools, and wave type, construction and wetsuit buoyancy all shift the ideal. Demo boards near the number before you buy.
