Teacher Grading Time Calculator

Result

12.50h

Result: 12.50 h

Twenty-five papers at thirty minutes each is 12.5 hours of grading. The calculator does nothing but multiply your own two numbers and convert to hours, because no German state sets a binding minutes-per-paper figure. The minutes are your estimate, and the result inherits its accuracy from them.

How it's calculated

hours = papers × minutes ÷ 60

  1. StepCount the papers in the stack, across all classes you are grading now.
  2. StepEstimate the minutes one paper takes you — time a few before you guess.
  3. ResultRead the total in hours; spread it over the days you actually have.

What this number means

This page multiplies two numbers and divides by sixty. That is deliberate. The interesting quantity — how long one paper takes — has no official value anywhere in German school law, and inventing one would be the only way to make the calculator look cleverer than it is. Teacher working time is regulated through a weekly teaching load, the Pflichtstunden, plus a general civil-service working week; no state ordinance says a paper is worth fifteen or ninety minutes. So the minutes are yours, and the honest way to get them is to time three or four papers with a stopwatch rather than to guess from memory, which reliably underestimates. What surveys do measure is the total. A GEW Hessen survey of 766 teachers in May 2022 found that a three-week grading period added 40 hours 30 minutes on top of normal working time for a full-time teacher, and 31 hours 35 minutes for someone on a half post. The same report notes that the Hessen ministry sets no binding relief days for grading, while some other states do grant them by exam volume. Read the number this page gives you as a planning figure for one stack, not as an entitlement and not as a norm. If it comes out far above what your week can hold, that is a finding worth writing down before the stack arrives, not after.

There is no official minutes-per-paper figure

No German state ordinance sets how long a correction may take. Any minutes-per-subject table you find is a rule of thumb collected from teachers, not a norm, which is why this calculator asks you for the number instead of supplying one.

What is measured is the total, not the rate

A GEW Hessen survey of 766 teachers in May 2022 found a three-week grading period added 40 hours 30 minutes beyond normal working time at a full post. The same report records that the ministry grants no binding relief days for it.

Time three papers before you estimate

Recalled durations are systematically short, and the error multiplies by the size of the stack. Three timed papers cost fifteen minutes and turn the estimate into a measurement of your own pace.

The result is one stack, not a workload

It says nothing about teaching hours, preparation, meetings or parent contact, and it is not a legal statement about your working time. For that, your school authority and your union are the addresses.

Commonly misread

There must be an official minute allowance per exam somewhere.

There is not. Working time is regulated through the weekly teaching load, and no state ordinance quantifies a correction in minutes.

Half the writing time is a safe rule for the correction time.

It is a rule of thumb with no source behind it, and reported figures range from a few minutes to well over two hours per paper. Only your own timed papers settle it.

Fifteen hours of grading fits into a normal school week.

The GEW Hessen survey found a three-week grading period adds over 40 hours on top of the normal load. Grading is additional to teaching, not carved out of it.

Questions

Is there an official number of minutes per exam in Germany?

No. Teacher working time is regulated through the weekly teaching load and the general civil-service working week, and no state ordinance sets a per-correction duration. Any table of minutes by subject is collected experience, not law.

How do I find my own minutes per paper?

Time three or four papers from the same stack with a stopwatch and take the middle value. Recalled durations are reliably too short, and that error gets multiplied by every paper in the stack.

How much grading time do teachers actually report?

A GEW Hessen survey of 766 teachers in May 2022 found that a three-week grading period added 40 hours 30 minutes beyond normal working time at a full post, 38 hours at a three-quarter post and 31 hours 35 minutes at a half post. Those are totals for a period, not rates per paper.

Does grading time count as overtime?

That is a question for your school authority and your union, not for a calculator. Some states grant relief days by exam volume while others grant none, and this page makes no legal statement about your working time.
