Multiply the cross-sectional area by the flow velocity: Q = A × v. Square metres and metres per second give the flow in cubic metres per second — a 0.01 m² pipe at 2 m/s carries 0.02 m³/s.
It is the volume of fluid that passes a given point each second, measured in cubic metres per second. It tells you how much liquid or gas moves through a pipe, duct or channel over time, which is the figure that sizes pumps and ventilation.
For a round pipe the area is π × radius². Take the inside diameter, halve it to get the radius in metres, square it and multiply by π. A pipe of 0.1 m diameter has an area of about 0.00785 m².
Multiply by 1000, because one cubic metre is 1000 litres. So 0.02 m³/s is 20 litres per second, and 1.2 litres per minute would be 0.00002 m³/s.
Volumetric flow rate measures the volume per second, mass flow rate the mass per second. Multiply the volumetric flow rate by the fluid density to get the mass flow rate; the two only match numerically when the density is 1 kg/m³.
