What this number means

Every entry has the same weight. In the formula, x̄ is the mean, Σx the sum and n the number of entries. Paste a spreadsheet column directly, or separate decimal-point numbers with spaces or commas.

With decimal commas, use semicolons or new lines between numbers. Zeros and repeated entries count; empty lines do not. Text, missing entries between separators and values outside the supported number range produce an error instead of being silently removed.

The median gives you a second view of the centre when unusually large or small values move the mean. Use the weighted average calculator when two scores have different importance. This tool accepts up to 1,024 numbers within 12,000 characters and processes the list in your browser; the numbers are excluded from shared links.

Questions

How do I calculate an average?

Add all values and divide by the number of entries. The example buttons load independently sourced lists you can try with the calculator.

Can I paste numbers from a spreadsheet?

Yes, paste one column with one value per line. Choose the matching decimal convention and omit headings or thousands separators.

Do zeros and negative numbers count?

Yes, each entered number counts once, including zeros, negative numbers and duplicates. Remove an entry only when it should be excluded from the data.

Can I calculate a grade average?

Yes, if every numerical grade has the same weight. For two grades with different weights, use the related weighted average calculator.

Why does my list show an error?

Check the decimal convention, remove text and enter at least two numbers. With decimal commas, separate entries using semicolons or new lines.
