Multiply the fluid density by gravity and by the depth: P = ρ × g × h. With kg/m³, 9.80665 m/s² and metres, the pressure comes out in pascals — 10 m of fresh water gives 98 066.5 Pa, about 98.07 kPa.
It is the pressure a fluid at rest exerts at a given depth because of the weight of the fluid above it. It acts equally in all directions and depends only on density, gravity and depth.
Because the pressure comes from the height of the column above a point, not from how wide the container is. A narrow tube and a wide lake filled to the same depth press equally hard at the bottom.
Gauge — the extra pressure due to the fluid alone, above the surrounding air. For the absolute pressure, add the atmospheric pressure at the surface, about 101 325 Pa at sea level.
The standard acceleration of gravity, 9.80665 m/s², fixed by convention and tabulated by NIST. Local gravity varies by a few tenths of a per cent between the equator and the poles, which moves the result by less than half a per cent.
