Multiply the bar figure by about 14.5038. One bar is 14.503774 psi, which is why a tyre inflated to 2 bar reads roughly 29 psi. To go the other way, divide the psi figure by 14.5038.
One standard atmosphere (atm) is defined as exactly 101,325 pascals, the average air pressure at sea level. That is 1.01325 bar, 1013.25 hPa — the unit a weather forecast uses — or about 14.696 psi.
The pascal is the SI unit of pressure, one newton per square metre, and it is tiny for everyday use. The bar is simply a convenient larger multiple: 1 bar = 100,000 Pa = 100 kPa. Meteorologists use the hectopascal, which is the same size as one millibar.
The unit comes from mercury-column manometers, where the pressure was read off as the height the mercury rose. One conventional mmHg is 133.322387 pascals. Medicine kept the unit, so a reading of 120 mmHg is roughly 16 kPa or 0.16 bar.
