What this number means

A projection, not a forecast

It holds today's price and today's consumption steady for a full year of 365 days. Both move in reality, so read the figure as what a year at this rate would cost.

The calculator has no currency of its own

Enter the price per pack in yours and the yearly total comes back in the same one. Nothing here is converted.

Enter a typical day, not your heaviest

The whole year is built from that single number, so an unusual day gets multiplied 365 times. Pack size counts too — enter the one you actually buy.

Only the cigarettes are counted

This is the price of the packs and nothing else. Higher health-insurance premiums, medical bills and lost income are not in the figure.

Commonly misread

MisconceptionA pack a day is small change.

CorrectionAt 12 a pack that is 4380 in a year and 43800 over a decade. The daily figure hides the size of the yearly one.

MisconceptionThe yearly total will still hold next year.

CorrectionIt assumes the price and the number of cigarettes stay exactly where they are today. Change either one and the total moves with it.

MisconceptionPack size does not change the result.

CorrectionPacks per day is cigarettes per day divided by pack size, so it changes everything. Twenty-five a day from a 25-pack at 15 comes to 5475 a year.

Questions

How do I work out the cost of smoking?

Divide the cigarettes you smoke a day by the pack size to get packs per day, then multiply by the price per pack and by 365. Someone smoking 20 a day from a 20-pack at 12 per pack spends 12 a day and 4380 a year.

What currency does the calculator use?

Whatever currency you enter. The result carries no currency of its own: type the price per pack in euros, dollars, pounds or francs, and the yearly cost comes back in that same currency.

How many cigarettes are in a pack?

A standard pack holds 20 in most countries, though packs of 10, 25 and 30 also exist. Enter the size you actually buy, because the packs-per-day figure depends on it.

What does that add up to over ten years?

Multiply the yearly figure by ten. A pack a day at 12 is 4380 a year and 43800 over a decade, which is why a spend that feels like pocket change is worth writing down.

Does this include health or insurance costs?

No, this is only the price of the cigarettes themselves. It does not estimate higher health-insurance premiums, medical bills or lost income, so the true lifetime cost of smoking is considerably higher than the figure here.
