Examples

Rounding the tip and rounding the total are not the same thing. On an 84.50 bill at fifteen percent, rounding the tip gives 13.00 and rounding the total gives 13.50 — the second is the one people usually mean when they say they rounded up.

How it's calculated

tip = selected base × percent / 100; final payment = bill + rounded tip; split whole cents

  1. StepEnter the payable bill including tax, then any tax already included; enter money in whole cents.Bill before tip, including tax=84.5·Tax already included in bill (optional)=0
  2. StepSet the percentage you want to tip.
  3. StepChoose whether to round the tip, the total, or neither.
  4. StepChoose whether the percentage uses the full bill or the bill minus included tax; tax is never added again.Tax already included in bill (optional)=0
  5. ResultSet the number of people and pay the displayed counts at each amount; together they equal the final total.People sharing the final bill=1→12.68

What this number means

The bill is the amount payable before the tip, including any tax already charged. Enter that included tax separately only to choose a pre-tax tip base; it is never added to the payment again. First calculate the tip using the selected base and percentage, then apply the chosen aggregate rounding.

With no whole-unit rounding, the tip is rounded half up to cents for payment. Add that tip to the bill and distribute the resulting whole cents between the selected number of people. If the total does not divide equally, the stated number of people pays one cent more. The displayed counts and amounts always add up to the final payment; the primary tip calculation keeps its original precision for reverse calculations.

Rounding the tip is not rounding the total

Rounding the tip raises the tip itself to the next whole unit. Rounding the total raises bill plus tip and leaves the tip whatever remains — 13.00 against 13.50 on an 84.50 bill at 15 %.

The bill already includes payable tax

Enter the amount payable before tip, including any tax. For a pre-tax tip base, enter that already-included tax separately and select bill minus tax. Tax is never added to the payment twice.

No customary rate is built in

The table above only shows what is usual where; the page does not decide it. The percentage is yours to set.

Commonly misread

MisconceptionI said round up, so the tip goes to the next whole unit.

CorrectionThat is one of the two options. Rounding the total up is what most people mean, and on 84.50 at 15 % it gives 13.50 rather than 13.00.

MisconceptionRounding the total up always adds only small change to the tip.

CorrectionIt adds whatever lifts bill plus tip to the next whole unit. On 67.30 at 20 % the tip goes from 13.46 to 13.70.

MisconceptionThe calculator knows whether my bill includes tax.

CorrectionEnter any tax already included separately and choose the tip base. The payable bill itself remains unchanged.

Questions

What does the rounding option do?

Rounding the tip raises the tip itself to the next whole unit; rounding the total raises the bill plus tip. On 84.50 at 15 % that is 13.00 against 13.50 — the second is what most people mean by rounding up.

Do I tip on the amount before or after tax?

The bill field is the payable amount including tax, before tip. Enter the included tax separately and choose bill minus tax for a pre-tax tip base, or use the full bill. This never adds the tax again.

How much should I tip?

It depends on the country and the service; the table above shows what is customary. The calculator assumes no rate of its own — the percentage is yours to set.

Can I set the tip to 0 %?

Yes, the percentage field starts at 0. Rounding the tip up leaves it at zero, but rounding the total up does not: a bill of 84.50 still rounds to 85 and leaves 50 cents behind. Only on a whole-number bill does every setting give exactly zero.
