Tip Calculator

Result

12.68

Result: 12.68

Rounding the tip and rounding the total are not the same thing. On an 84.50 bill at fifteen percent, rounding the tip gives 13.00 and rounding the total gives 13.50 — the second is the one people usually mean when they say they rounded up.

What this number means

Rounding the tip is not rounding the total

Rounding the tip raises the tip itself to the next whole unit. Rounding the total raises bill plus tip and leaves the tip whatever remains — 13.00 against 13.50 on an 84.50 bill at 15 %.

The percentage applies to the amount you enter

The calculator takes the percentage from whatever figure sits in the bill field, before or after tax alike. To tip on the pre-tax subtotal, enter that subtotal instead of the total.

No customary rate is built in

The table above only shows what is usual where; the page does not decide it. The percentage is yours to set.

Commonly misread

I said round up, so the tip goes to the next whole unit.

That is one of the two options. Rounding the total up is what most people mean, and on 84.50 at 15 % it gives 13.50 rather than 13.00.

Rounding the total up always adds only small change to the tip.

It adds whatever lifts bill plus tip to the next whole unit. On 67.30 at 20 % the tip goes from 13.46 to 13.70.

The calculator knows whether my bill includes tax.

It does not. It takes the percentage from the figure you type, so type the base you want to tip on.

Questions

What does the rounding option do?

Rounding the tip raises the tip itself to the next whole unit; rounding the total raises the bill plus tip. On 84.50 at 15 % that is 13.00 against 13.50 — the second is what most people mean by rounding up.

Do I tip on the amount before or after tax?

The calculator applies the percentage to whatever amount you enter. If you want to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, enter that figure rather than the total.

How much should I tip?

It depends on the country and the service; the table above shows what is customary. The calculator assumes no rate of its own — the percentage is yours to set.

Can I set the tip to 0 %?

Yes, the percentage field starts at 0. Rounding the tip up leaves it at zero, but rounding the total up does not: a bill of 84.50 still rounds to 85 and leaves 50 cents behind. Only on a whole-number bill does every setting give exactly zero.
