Result: 11 business days

Pick two dates and the calculator counts the business days between them, both dates included — the same rule as NETWORKDAYS. From 31 March to 14 April 2026 that is 11. Add a holiday calendar and weekday holidays drop out as well: 24 December 2026 to 4 January 2027 gives 6 on the US calendar.

How it's calculated

business days = weekdays in the span − weekday holidays

  1. StepEnter the first and the last day of the span. Both of them count.
  2. StepChoose the holiday calendar that governs the work, or none at all.
  3. ResultEvery Saturday and Sunday drops out, then every holiday that falls on a weekday.

What this number means

A business day survives two filters: it has to be a weekday, and it must not be a holiday in the calendar that governs the work. This page applies both to a span and returns one number, counting the first and the last day — the same convention as NETWORKDAYS in a spreadsheet. From 31 March to 14 April 2026 that leaves 11 of 15 calendar days; the four that fall away are the two weekends. Add the US federal calendar to the span from 24 December 2026 to 4 January 2027 and two more drop out, Christmas Day and New Year's Day, both of them Fridays: 12 calendar days become 6 business days. Only holidays on a weekday matter. Boxing Day 2026 is a Saturday, so the German calendar deducts nothing for it — the day was already outside the count. The reverse case is the US observation rule, where a fixed holiday on a Saturday moves to the Friday before and does cost a business day. Two limits are worth knowing before you rely on the number. The German option is the nationwide set of nine holidays, so anything specific to a single state has to be subtracted by hand. And the page knows nothing about time zones or cut-off times: it works in whole calendar dates, so a document that arrives after a local deadline may need a later start date than the one you entered.

Both dates count

This page follows the NETWORKDAYS rule: the first and the last day are inside the span. That is one more than the “after start” counting many contracts use for deadlines.

The calendar is your decision, not the maths

Banking, stock exchanges, shipping and public offices do not close on the same days. The arithmetic here is reliable; picking the wrong calendar still gives the wrong deadline.

Germany means nationwide only

The nine holidays used here are the ones observed in all sixteen states. Corpus Christi, All Saints and Epiphany are state holidays and are not deducted.

US holidays move, German ones do not

A fixed US federal holiday on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before, on a Sunday on the Monday after. Note that the Federal Reserve Banks themselves stay open on that Friday — only the Board of Governors closes.

Commonly misread

From 31 March to 14 April 2026 there are 10 business days, because the start day does not count.

Counting both ends gives 11. The value of 10 is the “after start” convention, which this page does not use.

Choosing “Germany” covers every German public holiday.

It covers the nine nationwide ones. State holidays such as Corpus Christi or All Saints are not deducted.

A holiday that lands on a Saturday costs you a business day.

It does not — that Saturday was never a business day. Only the observed weekday, if the calendar moves it, is deducted.

The result is the legal deadline.

It is a planning figure. Which calendar governs, and how the first day is counted, is written in the contract or the statute.

Questions

What counts as a business day?

Monday through Friday, minus any recognised weekday holiday in the calendar you pick. That definition shifts once you move between government, banking, exchange and country calendars, so choose the calendar first.

Does the start date count?

Yes. Both the first and the last day are inside the count, which is the NETWORKDAYS convention. Many deadline rules count from the day after the start instead, which gives one less.

Do federal holidays count as business days?

No. A recognised holiday that falls on a weekday is removed. A fixed-date US holiday landing on Saturday is observed on the preceding Friday, and on Sunday on the following Monday.

Does the Germany option include every German holiday?

No, only the nine observed nationwide: New Year, Good Friday, Easter Monday, 1 May, Ascension, Whit Monday, 3 October and both Christmas days. State holidays still need a manual check.

Can I rely on this for a legal deadline?

Use it for planning and then verify against the rule that governs the case. Statutes, contracts and market calendars each pick their own holiday set and their own start-day rule.
