How the result moves

Consumption and efficiency are reciprocals, so there is no factor to multiply by: L/100 km = 235.215 ÷ MPG (US), or 282.481 ÷ MPG (UK). Double the MPG and the litres per 100 km halve. Watch the gallon — the imperial one holds 4.546 L against the US 3.785 L, so UK figures read about 20 % higher.

How it's calculated

L/100 km = 235.214583 ÷ MPG (US) = 282.481 ÷ MPG (UK)

  1. StepEnter your figure and say which unit it is in.
  2. StepIt is first turned into litres per 100 km, the shared base.
  3. ResultThat consumption is inverted again into the unit you asked for.

Questions

How do I convert MPG to L/100 km?

Divide the constant by your MPG: L/100 km = 235.215 ÷ MPG (US). Thirty MPG (US) therefore comes to 7.8405 L/100 km. For imperial gallons the constant is 282.481 instead.

Why can't I just multiply by a fixed factor?

Because consumption and efficiency are reciprocals. L/100 km says how much fuel a fixed distance takes, MPG says how far a fixed amount of fuel goes. Doubling the MPG halves the L/100 km, which no single multiplier can do.

What is the difference between US MPG and UK MPG?

A US gallon is 3.785 litres while a UK imperial gallon is 4.546 litres, about 20 % larger. The same car goes further on the bigger gallon, so it shows a higher MPG in the UK.

Is a lower or a higher number better?

It depends on the unit. For L/100 km lower is better — less fuel for the same distance. For MPG and km/L higher is better, because they measure distance per unit of fuel.

Why can't I convert a value of zero?

The relationship is a reciprocal, and dividing by zero is undefined. A consumption of 0 L/100 km or an efficiency of 0 MPG has no finite counterpart in the other unit.
