How it's calculated

Days = adjusted next payday − counting date

  1. StepAdd one pay period to your last payday to get the scheduled date.
  2. StepMove it back if it lands on a weekend or a Federal Reserve holiday.
  3. StepSubtract the days your bank releases the money early.
  4. ResultCount the days from the counting date to what is left.

What this number means

It counts days, never money

The output is the number of days from the counting date to the next deposit. Nothing here says anything about the amount, gross or net.

US bank accounts only

The weekend and holiday shifts follow the ACH network and the Federal Reserve calendar. For a German salary the pay date is set by the employment contract, and the closing days are those of the Bundesland.

A payday on the counting date is treated as done

ACH settles overnight, so the money is already there on the morning of the payday itself. The count therefore runs to the next payday after that date and is always at least 1.

The Saturday rule is the one that surprises people

A holiday on a Sunday closes the Federal Reserve the Monday after, and the deposit moves back to the Friday before. A holiday on a Saturday leaves the Friday before open, and nothing shifts at all.

Commonly misread

My payday falls on a Saturday, so the money comes on Monday.

It arrives on the Friday before. ACH does not settle at the weekend, so the payroll transaction books on the last business day beforehand.

A holiday on a Saturday moves my payday to the Thursday.

The Federal Reserve is open on the Friday before, so the payday stays where it is. The payday of Friday 3 July 2026 does not move.

Early-pay banks always release the money two days ahead.

The head start depends on when your employer submits the ACH file, which is why it is an input here. Choose none, one day or two.

Questions

What is the difference between bi-weekly and semi-monthly pay?

Bi-weekly pay means a paycheck every 14 days, so 26 a year. Semi-monthly means two fixed dates a month, usually the 15th and the last day, so 24 a year. Bi-weekly earners therefore get two months a year with three paychecks.

If my payday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, when do I get paid?

On the Friday before. The ACH network does not settle transfers at the weekend, so the payroll processor books the transaction on the last business day beforehand.

Does direct deposit go through on Federal Reserve holidays?

No, ACH stops on the eleven days the Federal Reserve is closed, and the money lands on the business day before. Watch the weekend rules: a holiday on a Sunday closes the Monday after, but a holiday on a Saturday leaves the Friday before open and shifts nothing.

How do banks release funds one or two days early?

Employers submit the ACH file up to 48 hours before the settlement date. Traditional banks hold the money until the deadline, while banks such as Chime or SoFi credit the notified amount straight away. The actual head start depends on when your employer sends the file, which is why it is an input here.

Why is the first paycheck from a new job delayed?

Most employers pay in arrears, for the pay period you have already worked. You work a full cycle, wait through the payroll processing window, and are paid on the next scheduled date. On a bi-weekly schedule the first payment can arrive three weeks after your start date.

Does this work outside the United States?

No. The weekend and holiday shifts follow the ACH network and the Federal Reserve calendar, which apply to US bank accounts only. For a German salary, the pay date is set by the employment contract and the closing days are those of the Bundesland.
